When you start a website you never know where in the world it might be seen.
As such, we had not anticipated the warm welcome that we received from our many Bulgarian friends. So, we tried to learn
more about their party culture and that process brought us to a holiday made for the Society of Recovering Sorority Girls:
Winemaker's Day!
Trifon Zarezan is an ancient Bulgarian folk festival celebrated on February
14th. This makes it a wonderfully sophisticated alternative to Valentine's Day for those of you who are not romantically
inclined. In essence, we are told that the day is celebrated thus: everyone dress up in their "Sunday best", crowns
a "King of the Vineyards", prunes the vines and sprinkles wine in the vineyards to ensure a good harvest. It must
have worked, because during the days of the State-run wineries, Bulgarian Cabernet Sauvignon was the regarded as
one of the best wine values for the money!
